The councilor for the Environment, Juan Olea, together with the CEO of Emabesa, Enrique Moya, has reviewed the actions carried out during the year, which include the maintenance of the 233 kilometers of sewerage network and more than 9,000 drains distributed in Benalmádena.

"During this intensive campaign it is planned to clean approximately 3,000 scuppers and about a thousand linear meters of cross grids," mentioned Moya. To do this, the municipality has been divided into five sectors, and Emabesa technicians are identifying the scuppers that need urgent cleaning and the areas with the greatest risk of water accumulation.

"The cleaning of scuppers includes the extraction of sediment from the scupper pit or receptacle, cleaning the grate and, where possible, cleaning the connection to the general collector," they explained. These first works are scheduled to last three months, as highlighted by the CEO.

It is recalled that most of the scuppers are clogged in autumn due to falling leaves from trees and waste thrown by people on the public road. "When street sweeping takes place, all the dirt ends up in the gutters. That is why it is important not to throw waste on the public road and to use the litter garbage cans," Olea added. In addition, heavy or torrential rains, increasingly frequent due to climate change, aggravate the situation.

In addition to this preventive campaign, the Municipal Water Company of Benalmádena performs annual maintenance of the sewerage network and the various pumping systems distributed in the municipality. For this purpose, it has a mixed suction-pumping truck that works all year round.

Finally, Emabesa reminds citizens that the sewerage system begins in homes, where inappropriate use can cause breakdowns and dangerous situations in the general system. Among the inappropriate uses is the disposal of wet wipes down the toilet, which cause clogging in the sewerage networks or pumping stations, putting the operation of the evacuation system at serious risk.
